A school social worker can explain to the teacher that when a kid has been through trauma, their brain is on high alert. That is why they might jump at loud noises or get into fights. The social worker helps the teacher understand that the kid is not “bad.“ They are hurting. Then the teacher can change how they talk or give the kid a break when needed, instead of punishing them.
Parents and guardians are part of the team too. School social workers talk with parents to find out what is going on at home and how to help. They might connect the family with outside help, like a counselor or food assistance. They give parents tips on how to help their kid feel safe at home. It takes a whole team to help a kid heal, and the social worker is the person who keeps everyone working together.
One of the most important things school social workers do is create a safe place at school. For a kid who has been through tough times, school might feel like the only place that is predictable. The social worker makes sure that kid has a spot where they can go if they feel overwhelmed. Maybe it is a cozy corner with pillows and books, or a desk right next to the social worker’s office. Knowing there is a safe person and a safe place can make a huge difference. It lets the kid stop worrying and start paying attention in class again.
Sometimes school social workers run small groups. A group might be for kids who lost someone they love, or kids whose parents are divorced. In the group, kids realize they are not alone. Other kids have the same feelings. They can share stories and give each other advice. That can be really powerful. It helps kids feel like they belong.
School social workers also teach whole classes about feelings and friendship. They might come into a classroom and talk about how to be a good friend, or what to do when you feel sad. This helps all kids learn, not just the ones who are struggling. It makes the whole school a kinder place.
