Do you remember a time when you felt like the only kid in the whole school who didn’t have a friend to sit with at lunch? Maybe you walked through the hallways and everybody seemed to have a buddy except you. That feeling of loneliness can really hurt. It can make you want to stay home, or make your stomach feel twisty. But here is the good news: there is a person in your school whose job is to help with exactly that kind of feeling. That person is the school counselor.
School counselors are like friendly helpers who are trained to understand what kids are going through. They don’t just hand out schedules or talk about college. They care about your heart and your feelings. If you are feeling lonely, a school counselor can be the first person to really listen to you. And listening is a big part of what they do.
When a kid comes to a counselor feeling lonely, the counselor doesn’t just say, “Go make some friends.“ That would not help much. Instead, they start by asking how you are doing. They want to know what makes you feel lonely. Is it because you just moved to a new school? Is it because your old friends are hanging out with different kids? Is it because you like things that other kids don’t like? The counselor is not there to judge you. They are there to understand your story.
Once they understand, they can help you make a plan. Maybe the plan starts small. For example, the counselor might introduce you to another kid who also likes drawing or reading or video games. They might have a lunch group where a few kids get together to play board games or talk about their favorite shows. Sometimes just meeting one new friend can make the whole school feel less lonely.
School counselors also teach you skills that make it easier to connect with others. They might show you how to start a conversation. For instance, you can say, “Hey, I like your backpack. Where did you get it?“ or “Did you finish the homework for math?“ Little things like that can open the door. They might also help you practice what to do if you get nervous when talking to someone new. It is okay to be scared. Everybody gets nervous. But with practice, it gets easier.
Another important thing school counselors do is help you feel safe and welcome at school. Sometimes loneliness comes from feeling like you don’t fit in because of your race, your family situation, or the way you talk or dress. A good school counselor makes sure that every kid knows they belong. They might start a club for kids who feel different, or they might talk to teachers about making the classroom friendlier. They are like a bridge between you and the rest of the school.
Loneliness can also happen when a kid is being left out or bullied. School counselors know how to handle that. They can talk to the kids who are being mean, but they also help the kid who is being left out. They will not force anyone to be friends, but they can help create situations where kindness wins. Sometimes all it takes is one adult who says, “You matter, and I see you.“
If you are thinking about becoming a school counselor, you might already have a heart for helping kids who feel lonely. That is a gift. You would get to be the person who turns a bad day into a better one. You would learn how to listen, how to give good advice, and how to make a school feel like a family. It is a job that takes patience and kindness, but it is also one of the most rewarding jobs you can have.
You do not have to be a perfect talker to be a school counselor. You just have to care. When a kid walks into your office with their head down, you get to be the one who says, “Hey, I am so glad you came. Let’s figure this out together.“ That is powerful. That can change a kid’s whole life.
So if you are feeling lonely right now, remember that school counselors are there for you. And if you want to be the person who helps others not feel lonely, school counseling could be your path. It is about making sure every young mind knows they are not alone.
