Maybe you’re thinking about getting an online degree to become a therapist or a counselor. That’s a smart move. Online programs let you study from your living room, keep your job, and still chase a career that really helps people. But there’s one thing a lot of folks don’t see coming: the rules about living in a different state than the school. This is called out-of-state enrollment. And it can make or break your plans.

Here’s how it works. Every state has its own rules about which schools can teach students who live inside that state. Even if a school is fully online, it still needs permission from each state to offer courses there. This is called state authorization. Some states are part of a big agreement that makes it easy for schools to serve students across state lines. That agreement is called the State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement, but people just say SARA. If a school is part of SARA, it can enroll students from any state that is also in SARA. That covers most of the country, but not all states are in it. California, for example, is not part of SARA for most programs. So if you live in California and want to study with an online school based in Texas, the school might not have the green light to teach you.

Why does this matter for a therapy degree? Because becoming a therapist doesn’t end with graduation. You also need a license to practice. And each state has its own licensing board with its own rules. If you earn your degree from a school that wasn’t allowed to teach in your state, that license board might not accept your degree. You could finish all your coursework, do your internships, and then find out you can’t get a job in the place you call home. That’s a huge bummer, and you can avoid it with a little checking ahead of time.

Let me walk you through what to do. First, look at the school’s website. Most good online programs have a page called “State Authorization” or “Out-of-State Students.” That page will list every state where the school is approved to enroll students. If your state is not on the list, you cannot legally take classes from that school while living there. Second, if you can’t find that page, call the admissions office. That’s often done in your local area. But some schools have agreements only with certain states for placing students. You need to make sure the school can help you find a site in your state. Again, the admissions office can tell you. If they say they only have placement partners in a few states, and yours isn’t one, you’ll have to look elsewhere.

Some people think, “I can just move to the school’s state for a little while.” That’s possible, but it’s a big step. You’d have to change your address, maybe get a new driver’s license, and possibly pay different tuition rates. And if you move back after graduation, you’ll still need to meet your home state’s licensing requirements. So it’s not the easiest fix.

She was about to apply when she decided to check the state authorization list. New York wasn’t on it. She called the school, and they said they were not approved in New York because New York has very strict rules. She had to go with a different school that had approval in all 50 states. It was a little more expensive, but it saved her from a huge headache later.

So what should you do? Start your search by writing down three or four online programs that interest you. Then, for each one, check if your state is on their approval list. If the list is not online, call or email. Do this before you spend time filling out applications or paying fees. Also, ask about their clinical placement options for your state. Some schools will help you find a site; others expect you to find it yourself. That’s okay as long as the school’s license board in your state accepts the site you find.

One more tip: look up your own state’s requirements for becoming a therapist. Some states want you to take specific courses that might not be in every online program. If you pick a program that doesn’t cover those courses, you’ll have to take extra classes later. Most good programs already match the national standards, but it’s worth checking.

I know this sounds like a lot of homework. But trust me, a few hours of research now will save you years of frustration later. Online therapy degrees are a wonderful path. They give you freedom and flexibility. You can learn from top experts without leaving your town. Just make sure the path is open for where you live.
